How does exercise equipment detect you heart rate?

How does the exercise equipment at the gym detect your heart rate. For example, the elliptical machine has the metal plates on the hand apparatus, how can the machine detect your heart rate. Thank you in advance
Home gym equipment versus commercial gym equipment?

I have just bought a home treadmill and was wondering if a cheaper home quality treadmill with be as good as the treadmill in the Gym.
Will the expensive equipment at the gym make me lose weight faster because they are a better machine?
what is some inexpensive gym equipment or exercise materials that will give great results without the cost?

im trying to focus mainly on toning my butt legs and thighs and whittling my middle down ( well i want to keep my butt, just tone it more) what are any exercise equipment or workouts that will help me achieve my goal but not break my wallet im looking for very simple things that will deliver fantastic results
i just dont know where to start
resistance bands, weighted balls, stability balls, ropes, wieghts
i want some sort of equipment and keep it simple and easy to do or i might not keep it up if its too complicated
What are some alternatives when doing cardio?

I started this thing where I have to do cardio four times a week for 20 minutes. I have three opportunities to do cardio for the rest of the week. I need to do cardio this evening, but I cannot go for a jog or ride my bike outside because it is raining (my parents wouldn’t allow me to) and I cannot go to a gym or fitness center right this moment. I also do not have any fancy equipment at my home.
What can I do for cardio?
I know it might sound stupid, but would jogging in place for 20 minutes work?
will i be fit in time?

I just purchased some fitness equipment a bike and ab lounge ..just trying to get an idea how much weight i’ll lose in 4 months i was thinking i’d do 1,000 sit ups a week that about 200 a day and 10 hrs of cardio 2 hrs a day from people with personal experience do you think i will lose 40 pounds in 4 months?

Ok so i want to do track for school and it doesn’t start til march, but i was wondering what to do get ready for it. Its way too cold to go outside since i live in Alaska, but what are somethings i can do at home? the most exercise equipment i have is an elliptical machine and an ab roller. also i wwould like to have bigger calf muscles and nicer girl abs. And what foods to eat? Help please!!
